Imagine you decide to go on a car trip from Phoenix, Arizona to Boston. You get a map, you plan for expenses, you take the dog to Grandma's house. Everything goes pretty smoothly, right? You follow the map and get to Boston, pretty much as you had planned.
Imagine for this same trip, you just get in the car and start driving. No map, no expense planning and the dog is home with no food. You drive and drive and even though you are a pretty smart person and you think you know where Boston is, you become lost after a few hours.
Two days later you end up in Des Moines and end up at the Merle Hay Mall and do some shopping. Soon you head north on I-35 and keep driving. Pretty soon you are near Clear Lake, Iowa and you stop and honor Buddy Holly and the Big Bopper.
You decide to drive west and end up two days later in Fargo, North Dakota.
Planning a trip this way is like having no goals. The goals keep you on track and on budget and even though things may change along the way, you can adapt and keep moving toward your goal.
